The 1964 (CUT TO A CLOSE UP SCENE OF ANOTHER, OLDER, BLACK MAN IN THE CROWD) and 65 Civil Rights Act, (CUT TO A GENERAL SCENE OF THE CROWD) ah, [was] clearly, ah, something that (CUT TO A SCENE OF DR KING SPEAKING) needed to be done, in order to, ah, to hold, (CUT TO A GENERAL SCENE OF THE CROWD APPLAUDING) ah, to hold this notion of Justice in our Country.

Commentator: Many failed to notice (CUT TO A SCENE OF LARRY KRAMER SPEAKING) Mr Kramer's substitution of the words "sexual behaviour" for "skin colour" as he misquoted the Reverend Dr (FADE TO A SCENE OF DR KING) Martin Luther King Junior, on the steps of the US Capitol. Thus began the (FADE TO A SCENE OF THE MARCH) 1993 March on Washington for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender equal rights.
(CUT TO A SCENE OF THE CROWD WALKING PAST THE CAMERA, SOUNDS OF THE MARCH ARE HEARD IN THE BACKGROUND. THE CROWD SHOWN CONTAINS ONLY WHITE PEOPLE).
Anon 1 voice over:{In} the 1993 March on Washington for lesbian, gay, and bisexual (CUT TO ANOTHER SCENE OF AN ALL WHITE CROWD MARCHING PAST THE CAMERA) equal rights and liberation comes (CUT TO ANOTHER SCENE OF ALL WHITE PEOPLE IN THE MARCH, WITH THE WHITE HOUSE IN THE BACKGROUND. Lester James (voice over): The fact is that there is a movement in this country that threatens to undermine and (CUT TO A BLACK MAN SPEAKING WITH BLACK PEOPLE LINED UP BEHIND HIM, THE TITLE SAYS "LESTER JAMES, REGIONAL DIRECTOR, TRADITIONAL VALUES COALITION") {destroy} [belittle] the entire Civil Rights {movement} [effort] of the [nineteen] Sixties.

Lou Sheldon (voice over) :Homosexuals have equal rights under the First Amendment, the Fourteenth Amendment, (CUT TO A SCENE OF TWO WHITE MEN SEATED UNDER A TREE, HOLDING EACH OTHER. ONE IS DRESSED IN A SINGLET AND SHORTS, THE OTHER IN SHORTS ONLY) and the State Constitutions of every State in which they reside. Trent Lott: It's an effort, ah, by homosexual; and lesbians to promote their lifestyle. (CUT TO A SCENE OF WOMEN IN THE PARK, AS PART OF THE MARCH, KISSING) They don't want, ah, equal treatment, they wanna be able (CUT TO A SCENE OF TWO MEN IN DRAG, LABELLED AS MALE TRANSVESTITES) to push their ideas, to get acceptance of their lifestyle, and then get special benefits as a result of it.

Cheryl Coleman :This Civil Rights Act, ah, Amendment, (FADE IN THE TITLE "CHERYL COLEMAN, PUBLIC AFFAIRS REPRESENTATIVE") would completely neutralise the Civil Rights Act of 1964. What it would do is, (FADE OUT THE TITLE) that it would say that anyone, anyone with any type of sexual preference, which would include everyone is is, would be protected under this law, so therefore there would be no protection for minorities specifically...
(CUT TO TWO WHITE WOMEN, THE ONE ON THE RIGHT OF THE SCREEN SPEAKS).
Anon woman 1:Our community is on the verge of a [bursting] {breaking} point, (CUT TO A WHITE MEN IN WHEELCHAIRS, WITH OTHER WHITE MEN BEHIND THEM) people are dying and they're prepared to do anything. Commentator: According to the US Supreme Court, any person seeking protected minority class status, must satisfy three elements. (CUT TO A DIFFERENT VIEW OF THE PROTEST, WITH THE TITLE ON SCREEN SAYING "REQUIREMENTS FOR MINORITY CLASS STATUS : IMMUTABLE CHARACTERISTICS") Immutable characteristics like race and gender (CUT IN THE WORDS "FINANCIAL DISCRIMINATION") financial discrimination, and (CUT IN THE WORDS "POLITICAL WEAKNESS") political weakness. (CUT TO ANOTHER SHOT OF THE SUPREME COURT, WITH THE TITLE ACROSS IT SAYING "TO QUALIFY FOR MINORITY CLASS STATUS: THE GROUP MUST HAVE UNCHANGEABLE CHARACTERISTICS") The group must be clearly identified by unchangeable physical characteristics such as skin colour or gender, that defines them as an insular and discrete group.

Edwin MeeseAs a [white] male, I (FADE IN THE TITLE "EDWIN MEESE, FORMER UNITED STATES ATTORNEY GENERAL") have no rights what[so]ever, other than what is shared [with] {by} everybody else. Ah, we have granted certain Rights (CUT TO A 1960's BLACK AND WHITE SHOT OF A DOOR CLOSING, THE SIGN ON THE DOOR SAYS "COLORED ENTRANCE", WITH AN ARROW POINTING TO THE RIGHT) to take, care of past discrimination. Invidious discrimination (CUT TO 1960's BLACK AND WHITE SHOT OF A SIGN SAYING "WAITING ROOM FOR WHITES ONLY" WITH AN ARROW POINTING TO THE LEFT) based on such thing as race, ah, (CUT TO EDWIN MEESE) or, ah, [or on] gender. But it seems to me [that], again, these are benign characteristics, having nothing to do with behaviour.

Trent Lott :Minorities have come in and said,(CUT TO THREE WHITE MEN BLOWING KISSES TO THE CAMERA) we resent the homosexual community comparing, ah, skin colour to that kind of lifestyle. (CUT TO TRENT LOTT) Skin colour is not something we can control.

Trent Lott: [But homosexuality is a preference. It is something that can be dealt with. It can be controlled.]
Lou Lopez : [Homosexuality is a lifestyle. The Hispanic Community is an ethnic group. The Hispanic community does not want to be compared with homosexuals.]
Raymond Kwong: [The government has no business putting its stamp of approval on a behavioural-based group, let alone elevated to full minority status.]
Lester James (Afro-American): [The high-handed attempt on the part of gay and lesbian movements to highjack the 1964 Civil Rights Act in order to try to give national credence to their immoral lifestyle is an offence to Black America.]
Emanuel McLittle : [There are few people willing to stand up and rebut this whole notion that there is any kind of comparison to the ....]

Emanuel McLittle :... sexuality of homosexuals, and the skin tone (FADE TO A BLACK MAN IN THE 1963 CIVIL RIGHTS MARCH) of Black people. It is a horrendous lie. (CUT TO EMANUEL MCLITTLE) Black people are not born ... choosing to be Black. [But] {the} homosexual[s] on the other hand, despite what all of them seem to want to (CUT TO TWO WHITE MEN, IN WHITE SHIRTS AND BLACK BOW TIES, KISSING) indicate to us, choose their homosexual lifestyle[s].

Commentator:The group must have suffered a history of discrimination resulting in the lack of ability to earn an average mean income, obtain [an] adequate education, or enjoy cultural opportunities. (CUT TO A SPLIT SCREEN, WHITE MEN ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE SCREEN, BLACK MEN ON THE RIGHT SIDE) Compare these results of a nationwide survey reported in The Wall Street Journal between homosexuals and African Americans regarding, (FADE TO THE TITLE ON SCREEN "AVERAGE HOUSE INCOMES: HOMOSEXUALS $55,430; AFRICAN AMERICANS $12,166") average household incomes, (CHANGE THE TITLE TO "PERCENTAGE OF COLLEGE GRADUATES; HOMOSEXUALS 60%; AFRICAN AMERICANS 5%") .. percentage of College graduates, (CHANGE THE TITLE TO "PERCENTAGE OF PROFESSIONAL POSITIONS: HOMOSEXUALS 49%; AFRICAN AMERICANS 1%") percentage of those holding professional managerial positions, (CHANGE THE TITLE TO "PERCENTAGE OF OVERSEAS VACATIONS: HOMOSEXUALS 66%; AFRICAN AMERICANS 1%") ... percentage of those who have taken overseas vacations. (CHANGE THE TITLE TO "EVER DENIED THE RIGHT TO VOTE: HOMOSEXUALS: NO; AFRICAN AMERICANS: YES") Have either African Americans [or homosexuals] ever been denied the right to vote? Jan Rice : Their high income, (FADE IN TITLE "JAN RICE, COMMITTEE OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS") their education, their, their current status in society, compared to the mean, (FADE OUT TITLE) or the median, income in, in minority families today there's just, there's no comparison. So for them to want protection under this law, {is to try to} [and to try to further] beat down the minorities and further lessen their chances of equal protection and equal chances at jobs, I just think is ludicrous.

Lou Sheldon :If you look across America, homosexuals (CUT TO A 1960'S BLACK AND WHITE SCENE IN A GHETTO WITH A YOUNG CHILD STANDING BESIDE, AND HOLDING, A LAMP POST) are not in conclaves, [as] homeless people, under bridges, (CUT TO A 1960'S BLACK AND WHITE SCENE OF A BLACK FAMILY STANDING OUTSIDE AN OLD RAMSHACKLE HOUSE) and in food-lines waiting for things. These (FADE IN SINISTER MUSIC IN THE BACKGROUND, FADE TO A SCENE OF A FLOAT IN A PARADE WITH DRAG QUEENS ON IT - THIS IS NOT A PART OF THE MARCH) are high income people who want to push their agenda.

Trent Lott (voice over):I think [that] it [flaunts] {is really, ah, false} (CUT TO A PERSON DRESSED AS THE STATUE OF LIBERTY HOLDING A SIGN SAYING "GAY IN THE U.S.A.") and makes a mockery of other legitimate Civil Rights, ah, that people have worked for, for years. TRENT LOTT) And to give this, kind of recognition is going to undermine all kinds of laws that are already on the books, and it's gonna hurt a lot of people that deserve these protections.

Commentator: The group must demonstrate that they are politically powerless. (CUT TO A HEADLINE OF THE WASHINGTON POST, WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 23, 1992, "GAYS MOBILIZING FOR CLINTON AS RIGHTS BECOME AN ISSUE") Their political power was further evidenced by the appointment of militant lesbian activist Roberta Achtenburg (CUT TO A NEWSPAPER HEADLINE "GAY ACTIVIST OK'D FOR FAIR HOUSING POST") as the nations top fair housing official.

John Stein: We have more, (FADE IN THE TITLE "JOHN STEIN, HOMOSEXUAL, REPRESENTATIVE QUEER NATION") more support in Congress than, than non-supporters. There are many people [that] {who} come out repeatedly . (FADE OUT TITLE) Ah, the DC City Government, the, all of the City Council members have come out repeatedly in favour of gay rights.
