Voice Over:There is a killer in our midst.  It is one of the most serious health problems that we have ever faced. It threatens our very existence. It is AIDS.  (CUT TO A SCENE OF PEOPLES LEGS WALKING AWAY FROM CAMERA)  Because America's leaders have refused to track the disease it's hard to know how many are infected. (CUT TO A SCENE OF PEOPLES LEGS WALKING TOWARDS CAMERA) As to it's range, somewhere between two and ten million.  So far the (CUT TO A SCENE OF TWO MEN HOLDING EACH OTHERS WAIST) male homosexual community has been attacked the hardest. (CUT TO SLOW MOTION SCENE OF TWO MEN DANCING IN CROWD ONE WEARING A LEATHER JACKET THE OTHER A GREY TOP)  Many are unaware that they are contagious and continue to infect others with this fatal virus. (CUT TO A SCENE OF A PERSON IN SURGICAL GOWN AND MASK ADJUSTING THE FLOW OF AN INTRAVENOUS DRIP) Thousands of haemophiliacs (CUT TO A SCENE OF ELDERLY MAN IN HOSPITAL BED), blood transfusion recipients (CUT TO A SCENE OF PERSON SHOOTING UP), and intravenous drug abusers have also died. (CUT TO A SCENE OF CROWD OF PEOPLE) And with aggressive rapidity AIDS is now preying among our heterosexual population. (CUT TO A SCENE OF A PERSON IN WHEELCHAIR. Steven Larson (voice over)AIDS is an acronym standing for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (CUT TO A SCENE OF "DR. STEVEN F. LARSON, INFECTIOUS DISEASES SPECIALIST") It's a clinical diagnosis of the end stage of a virus infection with Human Immune deficiency Virus.

(CUT TO PICTURE OF HIV 1 VIRUS)

Michael Gebott (voice over):What you are looking at is the, the known causative agent of the disease AIDS. (CUT TO PICTURE OF CELLS REING ATTACKED, LABELLED "HIV 1, HUMAN IMMUNODEFICIENCY VIRUS")  Um, this is the HIV one virus. (CUT TO A SCENE OF "MICHAEL GEBOTT, AIDS RESEARCHER") Ah, it's a very, it's a very interesting organism, and it's uniquely designed, ... to um, (CUT TO PICTURE OF CELLS) live successfully, in a cell.

(CUT TO A SCENE OF "DR HAROLD JAFFE, CHIEF OF EPIDEMIOLOGY, CDC").

Harold Jaffe :Once somebody's infected with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus, the virus attacks certain kinds of, white blood cells, which are (CUT TO A PICTURE OF BLOOD CELLS) critical to the immune system. When that happens the person develops (CUT TO A SCENE OF ROW UPON ROW OF PEOPLE IN WHEELCHAIRS BEING PUSHED BY OTHERS N A DEMONSTRATION) what we call immune deficiency. And when people have immune deficiency, they become (CUT TO PICTURE OF ULCERATION SCARS ON A LIMB) susceptible to a whole variety of very (CUT TO A SCENE OF ULCERATION SCARS ON THE SOLE OF A FOOT) serious infections, and even some kinds cancers, that people with normal immune systems would not be, ah, susceptible to.

Michael Gebott (voice over) :When the virus gets into the blood stream, immediately it starts looking for a (CUT TO A SCENE OF T-CELLS WITH ARROW POINTING AT AN HIV PARTICLE) particular type of white blood cell, that is the master control of our defence mechanism in the body.

(CUT TO A SCENE OF HAROLD JAFFE).

Harold Jaffe: Certain kinds of white blood cells called T-cells, are really the (CUT TO A COLOUR PICTURE OF T-CELLS WITH HIV PARTICLES ON THEM) central element in our immune response and our ability to combat (CUT TO A SCENE OF HAROLD JAFFE) a whole variety of infections. Once these cells are knocked out by the AIDS virus (CUT TO A SCENE OF A WOMAN IN A HOSPITAL BED, SEEN THROUGH A SLIGHTLY OPEN DOOR) then we become susceptible to many serious conditions.

(CUT TO A SCENE OF STEVEN LARSON)

Steven Larson:Once the virus has attached, to the specific, type of white cell (CUT TO A COLOUR PICTURE OF A T-CELL), the CD 4 lymphocyte, then the virus penetrates the cell (CUT TO A COLOUR PICTURE OF REPLICATING HIV PARTICLES), duplicates its genetic material, which is then added to the genetic material of the lymphocyte. (CUT TO A SCENE OF STEVEN LARSON)  Now lymphocytes exist for a long periods of time within the body, therefore it's felt that once infection (CUT TO A SCENE OF A MAN IN A WHEELCHAIR IN THE RALLY IN THE PARK) has occurred with this virus, then the infection, or at least the potential (CUT TO A SCENE OF PEOPLE IN A CROWD, EITHER IN THE MARCH, OR PREPARING FOR IT) for reactivation of the infection, is lifelong.

Michael Gebott :Infection by retroviruses is permanent.  Once you are infected, you never lose it. You never lose it because (CUT TO A BLACK AND WHITE PICTURE OF CELLS REPLICATING) the genetic material of the Virus, becomes incorporated into the (CUT TO A COLOURED PICTURE OF A T-CELL) genetic

material of the cell that's parasitised

Charles Schable :The AIDS virus tricks the body, into making an anti-body, that essentially does nothing, to kill the virus that's floating around in your blood.

(CUT TO A SCENE OF PEOPLE WALKING ON A CROWDED FOOTPATH, SEEN THROUGH A CHAIN LINK FENCE).

Steven Larson (voice Over) :Once the patient acquires Human Immune deficiency Virus, the patient will feel well for several years.  (CUT TO A SCENE OF PEOPLE WALKING ALONG A FOOTPATH) Incubation period from onset of viral infection to the development of symptoms ranges from three to seven years (CUT TO A SCENE OF STEVEN LARSON), and may, in fact, be ah, longer than that.

(CUT TO A SCENE OF PEOPLE DANCING AT A NIGHT CLUB)

Michael Gebott (voice over) :People can be ah, have the virus and be infectious for ah, (CUT TO ANOTHER SCENE OF PEOPLE DANCING AT A NIGHT CLUB, PAN RIGHT) seven eight nine years, and (CUT TO ANOTHER SCENE OF PEOPLE DANCING AT A NIGHT CLUB, TAKEN FROM CEILING, SPIN TO RIGHT) the diseased state may not be shown. Ah, I think it's only a matter of (CUT TO ANOTHER FLOOR LEVEL SCENE OF PEOPLE DANCING AT A NIGHT CLUB) getting enough years history, and we'll probably find out that people can be, ah infected a lot longer (CUT TO ANOTHER SCENE OF PEOPLE DANCING AT A NIGHT CLUB, TAKEN FROM CEILING) before they really start ah, developing, ah, symptoms of the disease.

John Ward:Someone who's infected with the AIDS virus may be completely, ... free of

any symptoms. They may be, you know, (CUT TO A SCENE OF PERSON IN A GYM DOING BICEPS EXERCISES WITH DUMBBELLS) strong, vigorous, and in very good, ah, (CUT TO A SCENE OF A MAN'S TORSO, WELL DEFINED, AND POSING) health, even though he's infected with this virus.

(CUT TO A SCENE OF A CROWD, WALKING FROM THE LEFT, PAST THE CAMERA)

Voice Over:Many people with AIDS appear healthy. However, they are contagious and

can infect others. (CUT TO A SCENE OF A CROWD WAITING, CAMERA MOVES THROUGH THEM) Every carrier of the virus will eventually become susceptible to life threatening diseases.

(CUT TO A SCENE OF A YOUNG MAN'S FACE, ZOOM OUT SLOWLY)

John Ward (voice over):  AIDS means that this person has severe opportunistic illnesses, mean illnesses that, say, only when their immune system in the body is malfunctioning (CUT TO A SCENE OF JOHN WARD). These opportunistic illnesses are very, very difficult to treat, and the mortality therefore from these illnesses is very high.

(CUT TO A SCENE OF A MAN WITH A BEARD IN A HOSPITAL BED).

Michael Gebott, (voice over):  AIDS itself is really the end stage of this infection. Ah, generally the individual that, um, Ah, is in this end stage does not die of AIDS itself (CUT TO A SCENE OF A PERSON IN A WHEELCHAIR IN THE MARCH), dies from some other generally opportunistic disease, that ah, normally would not bother them.

** Peter (voice over) :A couple months (CUT TO A SCENE OF "PETER, HOMOSEXUAL/AIDS PATIENT") ago my life took a drastic change, I was admitted into a hospital, and told, I had pneumo-cystus pneumonia.

(CUT TO A SCENE OF MICHAEL GEBOTT)

Michael Gebott:Infection with a form of pneumonia, called pneumo-cystus carinii, which is an opportunistic protozoan parasite. It's very, very common.

(CUT TO A SCENE OF A MAN IN A WHEELCHAIR, ANON ONE)

Anon One :I went into a hospital June 9th, with pneumo-cystus pneumonia which

is what fifty-two percent of all AIDS patients come down with first.

(CUT TO A SCENE OF ANOTHER MAN IN A WHEELCHAIR, ANON TWO)

Anon Two :I've had pneumo-cystus pneumonia, and I've had three different types

of cancer ...

(CUT TO A SCENE OF "PETER")

Peter:Since then I have been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, ... and now I have a lesion in my brain called toxo [TOXOPLASMOSIS]. I also have a lesion in my intestines, and neuropathy in my feet, my legs ... And a fear of many other things happening.

(CUT TO A SCENE OF ANON TWO)

Anon Two:.. then they found a cryptococcus in August, August, and they cut my lung open...

(CUT TO A SCENE OF MICHAEL GEBOTT)

Michael Gebott:... situation is um, Kaposi's sarcoma, a type of ah, cancer, that affects the, ah, capillaries, and the ah, particularly (CUT TO PICTURE OF THE BEGINNING OF KAPOSI'S SARCOMA ON SOMEONE'S BACK, ZOOM OUT) on the, ah, surface of the skin, and they ah, (CUT TO CLOSE UP SCENE OF SOMEONE, {LATER IDENTIFIED AS SEAN}, ROLLING UP THEIR SLEEVE TO SHOW KAPOSI'S SARCOMA ON ARM. THEIR FACE IS NOT SEEN) develop these ah, purple blotches, and potentially lesions on the, ah, on the extremities.

(CUT TO A SCENE OF "SANDY, HOMOSEXUAL/AIDS PATIENT")

Sandy: I have Kaposi's sarcoma, that's a disease that has these lesions. I don't have them

on my face, I have them on my body.

**(CUT TO A SCENE OF 'SEAN, AIDS PATIENT")

Sean:These spots that are on my arm right here, these are called Kaposi's sarcoma.

(CUT TO A SCENE OF "DR JACOB FLEISHMAN, TREATED FIRST AIDS PATIENT IN

CA")

Jacob Fleishman :This particular cancer, in a patient who has AIDS, is a very aggressive, malignant disease; usually fatal within a month to, a years time.

(CUT TO A SCENE OF "SEAN")

Sean :These lesions eventually spread down here to my feet.  (CUT TO A SCENE OF SEAN'S LEG) It starts to work like a tourniquet; as you grow lesions on the other side.

(CUT TO A SCENE OF MICHAEL GEBOTT)

Michael Gebott:Ah, there can be ah, lesions of mucus membranes. There can be a variety of yeast infections, affecting, ah, these individuals; ah, inflammation of the spinal column, meningitis, ah, or the brain, encephalitis.

Anon One :Before I was even outta hospital, I came down with fungal meningitis, which I still have and for which there is no cure for me  (CUT TO A SCENE OF AN OPERATING THEATRE IN A HOSPITAL) I've had blood transfusions, four CAT scans, ultra-sounds, dialysis My kidney failed for a while because of medication. I've had a couple of brain surgeries, ...

Jacob Fleishman :In addition to ah, capability of it's method (CUT TO A CLOSE UP OF AN OPERATION) of exposing the patient to unusual opportunistic infections it can directly infect (CUT TO A SCENE OF JACOB FLEISHMAN) clearly the central nervous system which of course includes the brain and can cause serious damage there.

(CUT TO A SCENE OF A CROWD, WITH THE CAMERA MOVING THROUGH THE

PEOPLE)

Michael Gebott (voice over) :AIDS can also, ah, seek out certain brain cells, and can selectively grow in them as well (CUT TO A SCENE OF PEOPLE IN MARCH, WALKING PAST CAMERA FROM THE RIGHT, NOISE OF MARCH IN THE BACKGROUND) and these individuals can, ah, walk around in, ah, a, with um, (CUT TO A SCENE OF PEOPLE IN PARK BEFORE OR AFTER MARCH) a progressive, form of ah, brain disease, ah, that (CUT TO A SCENE OF MALE CHEER-LEADER WALKING THROUGH THE PARK, HE HIGH KICKS AS HE PASSES THE CAMERA) results in dementia, a basic inability (CUT TO A SCENE OF PEOPLE IN THE MARCH WALKING TOWARDS AND AROUND THE CAMERA) to function, mentally, and all other symptoms ah, can be absent.

(CUT TO A SCENE OF JOHN WARD)

John Ward :Ah, people may get ah, um, signs of dementia, ah, personality changes, losses of memory, ah, difficulties in calculating figures and this type of thing, because the virus will infect um, (CUT TO A CROSS SECTION OF THE BRAIN, INSIDE THE HEAD) uh, the brain, cause inflammation and disruption of neurological function.

(CUT TO A SCENE OF THE CAPITOL BUILDING, WASHINGTON DC)

Michael Gebott:Several months ago the Federal Government, ah, class, began to classify these (CUT TO A SCENE OF MEN DANCING IN THE PARK, WITH OTHERS WATCHING SOMETHING THAT MAY BE HAPPENING ON A STAGE) individuals with AIDS caused dementia as full blown AIDS, and (CUT TO A SCENE OF PEOPLE AT THE SAME GATHERING, ONE MAN WITH A "SILENCE = DEATH" T-SHIRT ON, AND DYED BLUE HAIR, IS DANCING WITH HIS ARMS OVER HIS HEAD) overnight the population of AIDS individuals (CUT TO A SCENE OF TWO MEN HUGGING, THEN KISSING) in this country rose twenty percent (CUT TO A SCENE OF MICHAEL GEBOTT), just by a change in classification.

(CUT TO A SCENE OF JACOB FLEISHMAN)

Jacob FleishmanOnce you have the full blown ... AIDS ... entity, then it is clearly one hundred per cent fatal. (CUT TO A SCENE OF PEOPLE IN WHEELCHAIRS AT GATHERING, WITH BANNER ABOVE THEM READING "PEOPLE WITH AIDS-ARC") Eighty per cent of people will be dead within two years.

Charles Schable :If you get AIDS, you're in big trouble. You are not going to live very long. Very Long being a matter of months, or a year. (CUT TO THE SCENE OF A MAN WITH A BEARD IN A HOSPITAL BED AGAIN) And that's what scary about AIDS.

Jacob Fleishman (voice over): I've taken care of many patients with AIDS and that's a disease (CUT TO A SCENE OF JACOB FLEISHMAN) that will take a healthy robust individual (CUT TO A SCENE OF A YOUNG MAN IN A HOSPITAL BED, WHO ONLY HAD HIS FACE SHOWN PREVIOUSLY) and literally make skeletons of them, in short periods of time. A very devastating illness

Anon Three:And Jim was ah, I don't know, he was a big guy, you know; and ah, this was a man that ah, really literally just disintegrated in front of my eyes, and ah, it was real sad to see ... somebody .. just ... kind of shrivel into nothing.

Michael Gebott, (voice over):What, what most concerns me about this disease AIDS, is that so far there is no cure, so far no-one has survived the full blown, ah, AIDS disease. (FADE IN SINISTER MUSIC) This may very well be the, the next plague to go across our planet.

Harold Jaffe, (voice over)This virus can be spread in one of three ways. It can be spread sexually from men to women, from women to men, and also between men.  (CUT TO A BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOGRAPH OF A PERSON HANDING ANOTHER AN INTRAVENOUS FIT, THE TITLE CHANGES TO "PRIMARY MODES OF TRANSMISSION, 2. EXPOSURE TO BLOOD SHARING NEEDLES/ TRANSFUSION")  It can be spread by ah, exposure to blood for example through drug abusers sharing needles, or receiving transfusions. (CUT TO A BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOGRAPH OF A CHILD IN AN INCUBATOR, THE TITLE CHANGES TO "PRIMARY MODES OF TRANSMISSION,  3. MOTHER TO CHILD, DURING PREGNANCY/NURSING") And it can be spread from mother to a new born child. We know, for example (CUT TO COLOUR PICTURE OF PERSON GIVING OR RECEIVING BLOOD THROUGH TRANSFUSION), that there are people who received a single unit of infected blood, who became infected themselves. (CUT TO A SCENE OF PEOPLE IN WHEELCHAIRS MOVING TOWARDS THE CAMERA WHILE CLAPPING)  We know of people who were probably infected through a single episode of sexual contact.

Charles Schable :It's conceivable that one virus particle can cause disease.

Harold Jaffe, (voice over) :Most AIDS patients in this country are either homosexual or bisexual men (CUT TO A SCENE OF SOME-ONE HEATING A TEASPOON WITH MATCHES, HANDS ONLY ARE SHOWN), or intravenous drug abusers.  (CUT TO A SCENE OF AN ELDERLY MAN IN A HOSPITAL BED) We have a smaller number of AIDS patients who have haemophilia, had been transfusion recipients, (CUT TO A SCENE OF PEOPLE WALKING AWAY FROM THE CAMERA) or have been the heterosexual partners of people infected with the virus. (CUT TO A SCENE OF TWO PEOPLE HOLDING EACH OTHER IN A CROWD IN THE PARK)  We don't know why it, happened that homosexual men and (CUT TO A SCENE OF A SEATED BLACK MAN IN A WHITE SINGLET, PAN DOWN HIS ARM TO SHOW HIM PREPARING A FIT) drug abusers were ... exposed to the AIDS virus early in the epidemic.  (CUT TO A SCENE OF HAROLD JAFFE)  But once that happened the virus spread very rapidly in those populations. We know that gay men who had (CUT TO A SCENE OF MEN IN A CROWD; TWO HOLDING ONTO EACH OTHER, ANOTHER USING THE SHOULDERS OF ONE OF THEM TO HELP HIM GAIN MORE HEIGHT WHEN HE JUMPS UP) multiple partners and were participating in - (CUT TO A SCENE OF THREE MEN; INCLUDING ANON THREE WHO IS HOLDING ONTO ONE OF THE OTHERS) certain sexual practices were (CUT TO A SCENE OF THREE MEN IN THE MARCH HOLDING ONTO EACH OTHERS SHOULDERS) very the virus to their sex partners.

Anon Four:I've been diagnosed for five years, I learned Monday that I have the wasting syndrome, which falls under the AIDS diagnoses, and ah, I did have a lover who died of AIDS in ... January of this year.

Anon Five :Yes I'm part of the gay, gay community, I'm also a recovering, um, IV drug user...

Harold Jaffe, (voice over) :We know that needle sharing is very common for IV drug abusers, and that (CUT TO A SCENE OF A MAN TAKING NEEDLE OUT OF HIS ARM, SOME BLOOD APPEARS) is a very efficient way to spread the virus.

(CUT TO A SCENE OF MAN AT THE GATHERING IN THE PARK, ANON SIX)

Anon Six :I got AIDS through IV drug use. Ah, I was diagnosed in um, January of 87.

William Dannemeyer:One to four million people in America have the virus, nobody knows for sure because they haven't been reporting it. Ninety per cent of those that have the virus don't know they have it.

Gerald Coates :One of the problems is that most of the literature that's come out in this country has actually been encouraging people into some sort of homosexual or bisexual lifestyle, or indeed a heterosexual lifestyle. William Dannemeyer :Let's not kid ourselves. We're dealing with the first politically protected disease in the history of this country. (CUT TO A SCENE OF WILLIAM DANNEMEYER. It's idiotic. Public health officials can't defend that.

Michael Schwartz:  There is not confidence, out in the general public, that the Government is doing everything it can tell the truth about AIDS, and to stop the ah, the spread of this disease. I mean, how can you seriously claim you're stopping the spread of AIDS, if you're not even testing people to find out who has the disease.

William Dannemeyer:  The polls show, the American public, is far ahead of the elected political leadership, on this issue; that is to treat it as a public health issue. And, ah, that ah, should be corrected, and can be corrected through the assertion of ah, public pressure, through citizens contacting their legislatures.

Michael Schwartz :People are not confident they're being told the truth, because they can see the Government is not doing what it needs to do to protect their families from getting AIDS.
